From former Wilford resident Mr Bill Dickens:

"The large Swithland Slate gravestone with a tiny bunch of yellow & orange flowers (to the left of the photo) marks the final resting place of my Great Grandfather John Dickens & my Great Auntie Elizabeth Ann Dickens.

"They were both born in Wilford with the rest of the family & lived on Ruddington Lane near The Crossroads next to Wilford House this is where the wealthy Smith's Banking Family lived. (Smith's Bank in today's Market Square is named after them).

"My Great Grandfather John Dickens was born in Wilford on the 18th. September 1854. On his birth certificate it shows his name as - JOHN DICKENS born in Wilford 1854 although up until he was married in 1875 he was calling himself JOHN DICKEN. His parents Henry & Elizabeth's surname was DICKEN So our family name was change from DICKEN to DICKENS by a mistake for ever !

"John got married at St. Wilfrids Church in Wilford Village to Elizabeth Beecroft on 18th. May 1875. John worked as a Boiler Stoker in his early years & then went on to be a Engine Fitter.

Their daughter Elizabeth worked as a Millinet, that's in a hat shop !

"My Great Great Grand parents Henry born 1828 & Elizabeth Dicken born 1827 (nee Bentley a big farming family in Wilford) are also buried very close by. Their grave stone is just out of shot. They were married at St. Marys Church in The Lace Market Nottingham on 2nd. February 1852. Henry lived in Wilford in the 1851 Census he was aged 23 & worked as a Saddler & Harness Maker all his life. He lived with his parents William born 1802 & Elizabeth Dicken born 1801 & brothers & sisters in Wilford.

"My Father William Joseph Dickens was born in Wilford in 1916 - died Wilford 1986 My Grandfather William Henry Dickens was born in Wilford in 1878 - died Wilford 1943. Both of them worked as Coal Miners for nearly all their lives at Clifton Colliery which was sited just over the River Trent from Wilford Church.

"I was born in Wilford in March 1950 & babtized at Wilford Church on 15th. October 1950. I started work at Clifton Colliery in 1965 as a " Underground Pit Ponies Ganger " Alot of people are surprised when I start talking about this but they really did have working Pit Ponies in the mid 60's"
