COMMUNITY FACILITIES SURVEY

5th December 2010

Wilford Community Group is working hard to provide a new community facility following the closure of the library. In order to apply for and secure financial assistance, the Group needs to show that the community wants a new facility and what kind of facility it would like.

To that end, Wilford Community Group has worked with other groups in Wilford to create a short questionnaire that will be delivered to all Wilford addresses and be made available to users of Wilford's current facilities during the Christmas break. We will then collate all the responses and report the results at the Wilford Community Group meeting to be held on Monday 17th January 2011.

If you are a Wilford resident or attend any of the groups that meet in Wilford we would like you to complete the survey. You can complete it on paper when you receive it in a few weeks or you can fill in an electronic (Microsoft Word) copy and send it back to WilfordCG@hotmail.com.

The explanatory letter can be found here.

The survey can be downloaded from here.

It is very important that we get as many responses as possible so that we can demonstrate to funding organisations that we have the support of the local community.

The only personal information we ask for is your post code. The email addresses attached to responses emailed back to the Group will not be retained or passed on to anyone else.

Thank you in advance for your support.

WILFORD TO LOSE LOCAL BOBBY

5th November 2010

It is with great sadness that the Wilford Community Group committee has learned that PC Nigel Brown will be leaving the force on 1st January 2011. The excellent relationship between Nigel and the committee has resulted in increased visibility of enforcement officers in Wilford and intelligence from the local community has helped solve crimes and reduce anti-social behaviour.

WILFORD LIBRARY ON BBC NATIONAL NEWS

17th June 2010

As part of an article about cuts to public services in Nottingham, Wilford library was highlighted on the BBC 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock national news as one of the services that will be lost.

WILFORD LIBRARY NATIONAL MEDIA COVERAGE

14th June 2010

Last week, two Wilford Community Group committee members were interviewed for BBC Television News to discuss the closure of Wilford library. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the interview is due to be shown on the BBC National News at 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock on Wednesday 16th June 2010.

Today, the Secretary of the Group was interviewed for the BBC Radio 4 Today programme about communities taking over the running of local libraries. Coincidentally, this item is also planned for broadcast between 6:00am and 9:00am on Wednesday 16th June 2010.

While the closure of the library is now inevitable, the Community Group continues to investigate the feasibility of an asset transfer. The issue will be discussed at the next meeting of Wilford Community Group that will take place on Thursday 24th June at 7:30pm at Wilford Social Club. All residents are encouraged to attend as we would like to hear their suggestions for what can be done with the site.

WILFORD CRIME UPDATE

17th May 2010

At tonight's Community Group meeting PC Nigel Brown reported that there has been an increase in crime (particularly burglaries) in Wilford in the past seven to ten days (you may have noticed an increase in police patrols recently).

(Report in the Nottingham Evening Post, Friday 21st May 2010)
The main trend is that break-ins have been to get hold of car keys to steal an attractive vehicle that is on the drive. While they are in the property they take the opportunity to steal small but high-value items such as laptops.

PC Brown reassured the meeting that Nottinghamshire Police are currently targeting Wilford in an attempt to solve and prevent these crimes - three individuals have already been arrested and night patrols are to be stepped up. The advice from PC Brown is as follows:

bullet

do not leave car keys on view, especially from outside your house (e.g. do not leave them where they can be seen by looking through a letter box) and conceal them within the house where they cannot be found even if a break-in does take place.

bullet

conceal any small but valuable items.

bullet

if you spot ANY suspicious activity, call the police. PC Brown said that they would prefer to be called out to false alarm than to a break-in.

bullet

now that the weather is warming up, make extra checks that all windows and doors are shut, even  if you are at home - remember that you cannot watch every window and door.

bullet

if you do some gardening, remember to put your tools away at night - spades make very good tools for prising open doors and windows.

PC Brown did, however, say that the crime rate in Wilford is still low compared to most other areas of the city, but we should not let our guard down.
