LEAD THEFTS FROM CHURCH ROOF 22nd May 2011 St Wilfrid's Church has reported that during May the church has had three thefts of lead from the south aisle roof which has left it with no lead covering and is temporarily covered by a tarpaulin.
The police have been involved with the two Church Wardens, Simon Massarella and Eddie Mason, to look at the future security of the church campus.
This follows five thefts three years ago which completely stripped the main roof of the church. Once again the scrap price of lead has rocketed making the thefts more attractive to the criminal. Eddie and Simon reported that following last year's theft of lead from the same roof, the roof and porch had been treated with Smart Water and anti-vandal paint. Insurance companies have now reduced their exposure to the cost of replacement to just £5,000 in one insurance year - the wardens and the Parochial Church Council have to find the difference. It is estimated that the current thefts will cost in the order of £15,000 to £20,000 to repair. This means that the Church here in Wilford will have to find the outstanding funds. This will mean putting some of the planned projects on hold.
Eddie said that the wardens are working with the diocese, our church architect, English Heritage and the council on finding a replacement material for the roof. Simon is also working with the council to look at improving the visibility of the building from all aspects.
If anyone would like more detail about what is happening please contact the church office.
